What is Ardaas?

Ardaas is a Sikh prayer that is done at the beginning and end of the everyday recitation of the five Banis. The word “Ardaas” means request, supplication, or prayer.

The Ardaas are always done standing or sitting with your hands folded in front of you. You should also have your head covered while doing Ardaas, either with a turban or a scarf.

The Ardaas begins with the recitation of the five Banis: Japji Sahib, Jaap Sahib, Tav-Prasad Savaiye, Chaupai Sahib, and Anand Sahib. These are followed by the reading of passages from the scriptures and then a short hymn. After this, everyone sits down, and the Granthi (person who reads from the Guru Granth Sahib) begins to read from the Guru Granth Sahib.

Once the Granthi has finished reading, everyone stands up and does an Ardass again.
